REPEAL OF DEATH PENALTY IN COLORADO
The Libertarian Party as a whole, opposes the administration of the death penalty by the State. The Colorado Legislature has passed the repeal of the death penalty, and Governor Jared Polis has stated he will sign it into law when it reaches his desk.
This has been a long fought battle for the Libertarian Party. Since the reinstatement of the death penalty, 160 Americans have been released from their death row sentence due to wrongful convictions, and an estimated 100 individuals have been wrongly executed. Additionally, minorities and the poor are disproportionally affected by this sentence.
Statistics show that the threat of a death sentence does not decrease violent crimes, nor does it save taxpayers money. Our Constitution guarantees the legal process of appeal for a capital punishment sentence. The appeals process is a greater taxpayer burden than a sentence to life in prison, and the overall cost of a prisoner on death row in comparison to a prisoner with a life sentence is higher.
