LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF COLORADO APPLAUDS CIVIL FORFEITURE REFORM

COLORADO—The Libertarian Party of Colorado expressed its support and gratitude for the passing of House Bill 1313, also known as the “Civil Forfeiture Reform” bill, by the Colorado General Assembly.

Civil asset forfeiture is a tactic leveraged by law enforcement agencies in seizing physical property that is suspected of involvement in illicit activities without due process. The use of this tactic has seen an exponential increase in use with the proliferation of the War on Drugs.

HB 1313, which garnered broad, bipartisan support, requires all state law enforcement agencies to account for all civil assert forfeitures to the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA). DOLA is tasked with organizing all of the data for publicly accessible website.

“Though not perfect, this is a step in the right direction,” comments Wayne Harlos, State Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Colorado. “This bill holds public servants accountable and enhances the transparency of law enforcement. There are no losers in this equation.”

HB 1313 heads to Governor John Hickenlooper’s desk for signature.
