Dear Libertarian Friends,
If you are a resident of the City of Grand Junction, check your mailbox! The ballot for April 2 city election is in there, or will be very soon.
In case you haven’t had a chance to meet the candidates or read the tax increase initiatives, I’ll share my perceptions below. I have met or listened to all of the candidates for city council on several occasions, and also have read the ballot issues and their justifications from supporters.
************************************************************
CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT B
************************************************************
Ron Michelson – Seems to be a big spender; also while he talks a decent game on transparency, doesn’t seem to actually have a grasp on what it means.
PhillipPe’a – Spoke with him on a couple of occasions; seems to be appropriately skeptical of new spending initiatives by the City.

VOTING SUGGESTION: Write-in a vote for yourself, or vote for PhillipPe’a.
************************************************************
CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT C
************************************************************
Anna Stout – Incumbent. Listening to her in at least a couple of different settings, she doesn’t seem shy about her desire for more government. She has also voted for many of the spending boondoggles Council has passed since she was first elected.
Write-in
VOTING SUGGESTION: Write-in.
************************************************************
CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT AT LARGE
************************************************************
Jim Doody – Spender.
Chuck McDaniel – Spender.
Dennis J. Simpson – Very skeptical of city spending, has looked over the entire city budget. Determined to oppose useless spending; will go over every spending proposal to look for propoer justification. Opposes all three new tax ballot initiatives; opposed improper city debt spending on non-necessity programs in the past. Very much in favor of full transparency.
Write-in:
VOTING SUGGESTION: Dennis J. Simpson

This is a $5.3 million tax increase for road projects. Libertarians oppose this because GJ is already collecting quite enough tax revenue; but the city just keeps redirecting it to nonessential, “nice to have” projects, rather than “essentials”.
VOTING SUGGESTION: Vote “NO”.
************************************************************
—– CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT REFERRED MEASURE 2B —–
************************************************************
This is a $10.6 million tax increase for police, fire, and EMS projects. Again, Libertarians oppose this because GJ is already collecting quite enough tax revenue; but the city just keeps redirecting it to nonessential, “nice to have” projects, rather than “essentials”.
VOTING SUGGESTION: Vote “NO”.
************************************************************
—– REFERRED MEASURE 2C —–
************************************************************
This is a $8.25 million tax increase for a community center. Libertarians oppose this because it competes with facilities already available by the private sector.
VOTING SUGGESTION: Vote “NO”.
************************************************************
—– REFERRED MEASURE 2E —–
************************************************************
This city charter amendment would eliminate the language that requires extensions of the local cable monoply to be submitted to the voters.
VOTING SUGGESTION: Vote “NO”.
************************************************************
—– REFERRED MEASURE 2E —–
************************************************************
This city charter amendment would allow the city to sign leases for its property for 99 years (up from 25).
VOTING SUGGESTION: Vote “NO”.

Election Day is April 2 — but there is no reason to wait to turn in your ballot. For this year’s city election there is no in-person voting. This means you can mail in your ballot, or drop it in a drop box.
Don’t forget to Turn It Over! — The official ballot will look like the official sample on the city clerk’s website. It’s a two-pager, so be sure to flip it over after voting the first side.
Don’t forget to Turn It In! — Two Ways to Vote:
1) Mail in your ballot before Thursday, March 28 to be sure it has time to arrive. Your ballot must be **delivered** by 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 2. Postmarked dates don’t count.
2) Drop your ballot in a drop box 24/7 by 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 2. Drop Box locations:
– GJ City Hall 250 N. 5th St.
– Mesa County Central Services 200 S. Spruce Stt.
– Grand Valley Transit 612 24 ½ Rd.
– Department of Human Services 510 29 ½ RRd.
Don’t Get Creative… — with your signature that is! To ensure secure elections, the County Election department validates your signature with other signatures on file. Make sure to sign your envelope before you return your ballot, and when you do, follow the directions on the envelope and use your usual signature.
Don’t Vote Alone!
Remind your friends and family to vote too! You could even turn your ballots in together!
Missing your ballot or need to register to vote?
Register to vote at GoVoteColorado.com or visit Mesa County Elections before 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 2nd, at 250 N. 5th Street. Don’t forget to bring your ID!
