The Libertarian Party of Colorado just had a tremendous 2010 convention.
We nominated candidates for U.S Senate, U.S. Congress, Governor, Lt. Governor, Colorado Senate, Colorado House, CU Regent and county commissioners from Boulder to Mesa County. (Click here for more details).
For the first time, we will have a state wide primary election. It will be on Tuesday, August 10, 2010. We had candidates get at least 30% of the vote in three important elections at the convention. According to state statute, we must have a primary for those three nominations.
While primaries are a waste of taxpayer money (there is no reason each party should not pay for its own selection of candidates), we are forced to participate by law. Therefore, we will take full advantage of the process to spread the message of small government.
I have already heard the same tired nonsense about how we will sabotage the election of members of the Big Government duopoly . The arrogance behind that ridiculous assertion is astounding. Members of the two-party duopoly assume every vote belongs to them, and any attempt to change the status quo is blasphemy.
As you know, Libertarians do not vote for Big Government politicians. Every Libertarian vote is a vote AGAINST Big Government politicians of every stripe, from Barack Obama to George W. Bush to Bill Ritter to Bill Owens. The notion that every third party vote would have otherwise gone to the Big Government Duopoly is absurd. We offer voters that would otherwise stay home an alternative: Freedom.
Even if the assertion were true, it is beside the point. Members of the two-party duopoly make the rules. Plurality voting works for them to maintain a grip on power and it discriminates against third parties that actually have principles. Plurality voting is not in the Constitution. Neither is the two party system. Both can - and must - be changed.
If they think we can "spoil" an election, let them think so. For instance, if a Green Party candidate got 2% of the vote in a given race, and the Republican beat the Democrat by 1%, let the Democrats cry and whine. Then point out to them that they make the rules, and if they do not want their elections "spoiled" then they can adopt a different system, like Approval Voting. "Spoiling" an election is impossible under approval voting.
It is never a third-party's "fault" if they play by the rules forced on them by those in power. I hope every race between the Big Government Democrats and the Big Government Republicans is decided by a margin smaller than the number of votes received by a third party. Then maybe those in power will realize it is in their best interest to change the voting system.
"Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost."
--John Quincy Adams
And Let Freedom Ring.
David K. Williams, Jr. Libertarian Party of Colorado State Chair
With the help of El Paso activists, I organized a well-attended meet and greet in Colorado Springs on March 16. Thank you to all the local activists and Board members who were able to attend and support this effort to create a new affiliate. I am following up with local activists with the intention of organizing El Paso Libertarian Party support for Libertarian candidates as well as taking advantage of upcoming outreach opportunities.
We currently have active affiliates in Arapahoe, Boulder, Jefferson, Larimer, Delta and Saguache Counties, with nascent groups in Garfield and El Paso. We also have a campus affiliate at Colorado State University. My next goal is to organize a meet and greet in Denver with the intention of forming a strong affiliate there. Douglas County is also high on my list of potential future affiliates. As for campus affiliates, the Colorado School of Mines is likely my next target. I'd like to appeal to anyone who lives in Denver, Douglas or any other county without an active affiliate to contact me. We can work together to organize activists in your county.
It was a great honor for me to put the following 25 names in nomination for
public office under the Libertarian label. While our numbers are
substantially less than some of our previous efforts, I'm convinced that in
terms of quality, this is the best slate we've run since I started doing
this sort of stuff 12 years ago.
These candidates will be working very hard bringing the message of
individual freedom and limited government to over three million Colorado
voters. The audience will be more receptive this year than any other.
Please, please, support these candidates in every way, and as much as, you
can.
As of March 1, there are 8,146 active and 3,825 inactive for a total of 11,971 registered Libertarians in Colorado. Last month's adjusted growth rate (normalized to a 30 day period) is 1.18% and the projected annual growth rate is 15.30%. I have submitted a CORA request for a price quote to obtain a list of Libertarians registered since the SOS dump. To actually obtain the information will cost at least $25, and I will provide the exact amount quoted to me in a supplemental email. Most of our registrations do not come through our VRD, and I believe that it is important for us to contact new members to welcome them and get them involved.
Speaking of VRD's, as I mentioned in last month's supplemental report, after a grueling wait at the Capitol, I testified against SB10-104 "additional VRD requirements" late in the evening on Feb 11 along with a few other VRD organizers (Common Cause, New Era Colorado, and a latino organization whose name I didn't get). The bill was killed in the State Military & Veterans Affairs Committee along party lines (yes, we actually have something to thank Democrats for).
Thanks to Mike Spalding for submitting names of activists for The Lights of Liberty Award by The Advocates for Self-Government. Honorees receive a certificate and a coupon for 40% off of purchases from The Advocates. The LPCO and its county affiliates would be grateful for donations of those coupons (AND the money to spend on literature and quiz materials).
We urgently need $1000 for booth fees ASAP!
Due to lack of funds, we missed the deadline for the early registration discount for Pridefest.
Van's Warped Tour tickets go on "pre-sale" on March 26. Thanks to Dan "Kilo" Sallis, for stepping up and donating the funds needed to buy six tickets.

If there is one message that has resounded with the mainstream media following our state convention it's this: The Libertarians are back with a vengeance! Following the announcement of our candidates who were nominated at the convention (view the release here), we saw an overwhelmingly positive media response.
When talking with reporters from The Denver Post, The Colorado Statesman, the Longmont Times-Call, The Colorado Springs Independent and others, it became clear to me that the mainstream media is once again paying attention to our party. Perhaps it is the momentum of the Tea Party movement that has forced them to cover outside the R's and D's, but our outstanding nomination of nearly two dozen candidates at the local, state and federal levels cannot be ignored.
Listed below are the accomplishments of the Membership Director for 2009:
I gave packets of marketing collateral to Board members and others to have available if people were interested in and wanted more information on the Libertarian Party.
I met with two Libertarian contributors in August, 2009 to ask for financial support of LPCO and received $700 at a time that the LPCO finances were at a low.
In August, 2009, I attended 2 town hall meetings held by Congresswoman Diana DeGette on the health care bill. In the first, held in Englewood during the day, most people were against this monstrosity. The second, held on Saturday at South High, was well attended with 75% for the bill. I asked if the bill required citizens to buy health insurance. Diana said yes. When I then asked what happened to freedom in our country, I was booed by 20-30 people.
I drafted a bare monthly budget for LPCO and approximate costs for purchasing electronic upgrades and marketing collateral.
I worked with the National Libertarian Party Treasurer to get a good count of Colorado subscribing Libertarians, Libertarians that supported National with at least $25/year. With this new count, Colorado moved into the top 10 states with subscribing supporters and we got another CO Libertarian on the National Platform Committee.
I drafted a script for use in calling Colorado registered Libertarians and gave that script to 10 volunteers to use. Those volunteers contacted about 800 voters (500+ by John Finger) using that script to gain deeper support from the 11,000 registered Libertarian voters in Colorado.
During 2009, I used that script and made 1000 phone calls to registered Libertarian voters in Denver County. Reaching about 600 to talk with, 200 were added to the CO Liberty newsletter list, and some of those voters answered affirmatively to contributing support in donations or yard signs for Libertarian candidates who may run in their district.
This was my focus for 2009 – to increase the number of active and contributing people to both the State Libertarian Party and the affiliates of the State Party. Yet with all these contacts, only a few of the 600 I reached have moved forward so far with actual support. I will be contacting them again in 2010.
OPPORTUNITY to help liberty: Volunteer Coordinator for the Libertarian Party of Colorado.
This person will use their people skills to find, motivate, and guide the various volunteers
that contact the LPCO, matching the volunteer interests to the needs of the organization.
This is a volunteer position for a political party that has a Board of Directors
that is committed, interesting, and active in the community.
A one year commitment with an average of 4-6 hours per week is needed.

We have increased our Membership to nearly 12,000 members. Still, there are only Thirty Three 1776 Club Members.
Please join these 33 dedicated individuals who help Coloradans hear the vigilant voice of liberty. With their support, Libertarians have ballot access, basic support for local Libertarian Candidates, rent, utilities, outreach/education for Colorado Voters.
Any amount helps. If we can do this much for free, what could we do with a positive budget? Please donate.
It's been a busy time for Libertarians, and for those of us on the western slope of Colorado as well!
The name of the western slope outreach director position has been changed to western slope regional director, to reflect the greater variety the position holds, beyond outreach.
2 Libertarians are running for county commissioner offices in western Colorado...Gary Johnson (www.johnson4commissioner.com) in Delta County and Steve Saint in Mesa County.
We also have a Libertarian candidate for the 3rd congressional district, which covers the entire western half of the state (and then some), Greg Gilman. I am working as best I can with all 3 of these candidates.
Thank you for your help in the 3 state wide petitions regarding car registration fees, property taxes, and state/local debt. Those initiatives are now on the November ballot as Amendments 60 and 61, and Proposition 101 (see www.cotaxreform.com for more information and to volunteer). The battle is not over. We need help getting signs put up and fliers handed out. Please email me at wsoutreachdirector@lpcolorado.org for an attachment of the fliers, or info@cotaxreform.com. These are important ballot initiatives!
I have had calls and emails from a large number of brand new Libertarians in western Colorado interested in running for office, meeting other Libertarians in their counties, and becoming involved in activism. I want to welcome you all aboard, and thank you for your interest in changing our cities, counties, and state back to rationality.
In the months ahead, we on the western slope plan to focus on getting our candidates into parades, debates, forums, interviews, and heard in whatever venues we can elbow our way into. We plan to organize regionally quarterly (as well as the usual monthly meetings for affiliates). And we plan to be seen and heard!
