March 2010 | Vol 39 Issue 3

  From The Chair

It's convention time!
The Libertarian Party of Colorado's convention is Saturday, March 20, at the Red Lion Hotel. More details below). The C&B Committee Report will be available soon. We will email a suppliment as soon as it becomes available. The Platform Committee Report is available in PDF here.

Currently, we have three Libertarians seeking our nomination for Colorado Governor.

We have candidates seeking our nomination for every U.S. Congressional District and the U.S. Senate. This is good news.

We have some candidates seeking our nomination for state General Assembly seats. We need more. If you score near the top of the Nolan Chart and can effectively articulate why you answer each question on the World Smallest Political Quiz the way you do, consider running.

With growing dissatisfaction to the big-government two-party duopoly, the Libertarian Party of Colorado has an opportunity to do well in the 2010 elections. We are the only political party that actually believes in small government and free markets. The ONLY ONE. However, to capitalize, we need to provide an option to the public. The best way to provide that option is to run as many qualified Libertarian candidates as we can. We are off to a good start. Let us keep up the pressure.

The night before our Convention, there will be a candidate reception at the Red Lion Hotel. You are encouraged to attend and meet them all. I will see you there. (More details below).

National Update:
As I write, I'm in Austin, TX, attending the yearly Libertarian State Leadership Alliance conference. It is a good opportunity to meet members of other state parties and to learn what is working in their states.

The Libertarian National Committee is also meeting at the same time. Our current National Chairman, Bill Redpath, is not seeking another term. As of now, there are five announced candidates to replace him. All five spoke at the LSLA.

They are: George Phillies, Ernie Hancock, Wayne Allyn Root, John Jay Myers and Mark Hinkle.

Redpath's successor will be selected at the National Libertarian Party 2010 Convention this spring in St. Louis, Missouri. The convention will be the weekend of May 28. Click here to RSVP!

If you have interest in attending the National Convention as a delegate, you are encouraged to attend the State Convention and seek a seat. Click here to RSVP!

Even if you can not attend the State Convention but wish to be a National delegate, you can have someone nominate you at the State Convention.

Other National News:
Tony Ryan is our District One representative on the LNC. Tony has done a great job representing us, but is not seeking another term. Tony's alternate, Rob Latham of Utah, does not want the position but is willing to remain the alternate. Enter our own Jim Remmert, of Boulder. Jim is seeking the District One spot on the LNC being vacated by Tony. Jim is the former Associate General Counsel for Exxon and has retired in Colorado. Jim is also in Austin meeting many of the LNC and letting people know he is running. Jim has my full support and I hope you all get a chance to meet him if you have not yet.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…

The Obama administration and the Democrat controlled congress extended the USA PATRIOT Act.

And Let Freedom Ring.

  Vice Chair Report
 By Steve Gallant, Vice Chair
I provided Jim Lark, National Libertarian Party campus outreach coordinator, with updated contact information for the Colorado State University affiliate. Lark provided some campus outreach material which I forwarded to Kristian Morey, CSU Libertarian Party affiliate president.

I spoke to a student at the School of Mines (CSM) about organizing (or re-organizing) a campus affiliate. Currently the CSM libertarian students are meeting informally at the Liberty on the Rocks/Red Rocks meetups.

At the January 26 Jefferson County Libertarian Party meeting and officer elections, Dan Sallis was elected affiliate chair, Bud Martin was reelected treasurer/agent, and I was reelected outreach director. Sallis and Doug Randall spoke about their campaigns for the LPCO gubernatorial nomination.

When I found out that Doug lives in El Paso county, I suggested that he might want to get involved with the nascent and growing core of Libertarian Party activists there and sent his contact information to the group of potential El Paso County activists.

The state capitol building will undergo extensive renovations. To help finance the work, it has been suggested that the state might allow "tasteful advertising" on the scaffolding that will be surrounding the building and dome. This might be an advertising opportunity for the Libertarian Party of Colorado, depending on advertising policies and price, of course.

  Campaigns Report
 By Norm Olsen, Campaigns Director
We have achieved our goal. We will have at least four candidates on every ballot in the state in November; five candidates on every ballot in Colorado is very likely. This is not my accomplishment, it is YOUR accomplishment. What is even more impressive is the high quality of our candidates and that several of these wonderful candidates are running very active campaigns; some more active then we Libertarians have ever achieved before. We can be very proud of those who are stepping up to the plate and getting out name, Libertarian, on four million ballots (times five!) come November. Election day will be a great day for us, something we can really look forward to. Soon I hope to switch to Election Night party preparations. Be there!!!

Wouldn't you like to be an active part of this great event? Are you not tired of the status quo? Is not this year the time to stand up and say, "It's time I did something"? There are 16 State Senate seats, 64 State House seats, and hundreds of county office slots on the November ballot that will be empty. Please consider filling one.

Yes, there will be an event or two that you will need to attend, some questionnaires to fill out, some campaign finance reports to make (on the Web, electronically). Total investment is about 12 hours of your time. I hope and pray that you will decide that this is the year that you will do more than just vote. Besides being fun, there is that really good feeling you get when you know in your heart: "At least I did something about it".

Please e-mail me at campaigns@lpcolorado.org or leave a message at 303-277-9967 to volunteer to be a candidate. You do not have to be at the convention to be a candidate, and we can fill vacancies for a short period time after the convention.

JUST DO IT!

  F.R. Outreach Report
 By Jeff Orrok, Outreach Director
I am looking for someone to succeed me as Outreach Director when my term ends at the State Convention on March 20. If you love schmoozing, email me at Outreach@LPColorado.org.

As of February 1st, there are 8,057 active and 3,896 inactive for a total of 11,953 registered Libertarians in Colorado. This gives us a growth rate of 1.2% for a 30 day period and a projected growth rate of 15.44% for the year. However, given it is an election year, this is probably pretty low.

Voter Registration forms with this year's number are finally available. On Wednesday, February 10th, SB10-104 "Additional VRD Requirements" died in the Colorado Senate's State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committee. The final vote followed party lines (2 Republicans vs. 3 Democrats). In addition to myself, representatives from Common Cause and New Era Colorado testified against the bill.

Christine Tucker and some Arapahoe and YAL activists staffed an outreach table at the Cannabis Expo in Fort Collins. There was an extremely small turnout (less than 200 total), but there were 6 Libertarian and 1 unaffiliated registrations, about 20 contacts, and $8.61 in donations.

I am starting to receive reminders to register for events such as Cinco De Mayo, Peoples Fair, and Pridefest, but due to our lack of funds, I am unable to submit applications. We need $1000 for booth fees ASAP!

  Legislative Report
 By Justin Longo, Legislative Director
I met with Buck Bailey and got a copy of his famous legislative spreadsheet. It's brilliant and simple. Some might say it's brilliant because of its simplicity.

Coordinated with Patty Springmeier to help with the End the Patriot Act rally at the Capitol. Suggested that Dave speak, which he did very well. (good job Dave) Advertised the rally via the Liberty Alerts a couple times.

Followed the "dirty dozen" and sent a couple Liberty Alerts concerning the times and locations for the hearings. Used my inside contact to get the latest scoop!

Thanks to Jim Frye, I have been alerted to House Bill 10-1143, which appears to enable RTD to trample property rights even further. Need to research this particular bill a bit more.

I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of "fusion voting" (HB 1077), as I would prefer almost any other alternative voting method to fusion.... but, alternative voting still needs exposure, so I still support any attempt at furthering the alternative voting movement.

I still want to do a podcast. The LPCO needs money to record studio quality podcasts. Click here to donate $50.00 for the first one.

Please forward this information to friends and family who are concerned about defending our freedoms!

  Media Report
 By Kate Melvin, Media Director
After our last meeting, I volunteered to read "The Naked Truth About Drugs" by Daniel E. Williams so the board could consider distributing the book in medical marijuana dispensaries. I read the book in nearly 3 days, putting it down only when I absolutely had to. Williams' book is a recount of his experiences with drugs, moving chronologically through American history as most people were exposed to them, including marijuana, LSD, heroin, morphine, etc, etc.

My only "complaint" would be the obvious attempts at adding historical context from statistics that support his arguments, but if you opt to read the book as more of one man's stories about drug use and his thoughts on public policy, then I think anyone would find it very enjoyable.

As a result, I suggest the LP distributes our copies of the book, with LP stickers on them, to various dispensaries around town.

I have been communicating with our new contact at Clear Channel Radio, Brian Johnson. He will hopefully be attending one of board meetings in the near future. My efforts to work with him were thwarted by my spam filter, which stopped all of his emails to me, but I think I've caught up with him. He is excited to work with the LP and I am hoping he will be able to help us grow our media.

I know Justin is eager to record more podcasts, but we're on hold for two reasons: The new Web site is not ready, and we have no money. I'm hesitant to spend even $25 a month when our bank account is dropping below $700. Anyone wishing to contribute funds to pay for pod-cast recordings may do so by clicking here.

I have already mentioned this to some on the board, but I will not be attending the convention due to a longstanding conflict. Rick Randall is acting as the proxy media director and will present my minority report on the motion to eliminate the publications director and wrap the newsletter under the new position, "Communications Director."

NOTE TO CANDIDATES: I was contacted by John King from the Pennsylvania Libertarian Party about his media project, The Freedom Link. His goal is to interview every third party candidate for Congress in the country and place the video interview on his YouTube Channel. Rumor has it that his project may have some "truther" ties, so beware of that. But I did notify him that I would send him a list of our Congressional candidates after the convention so he will be contacting you. You can find information about his project at: www.thefreedomlink.org

  W.S. Outreach Report
By Debbie Schum, W.S. Outreach Director
The Libertarian Party of Delta County has a new outreach director--Gary Johnson. Gary will also be the first Libertarian Party candidate in Delta County, when he runs for district 1 county commissioner this year. I will serve as his campaign manager.

I initiated an email conversation with one of the Republican governor candidates, Dan Maes, about gay marriage, rights vs. privileges and the responsibilities inherent in rights. Mr. Maes claims that marriage is a privilege, not a right, and that the constitution gives us our rights and all else is privilege. As this conversation began to develop into a debate, I included many other people onto the thread, including many Democrats and Republicans. The reception to and support of my position was well received by most of these people (and to my surprise for some of those people) and I received many emails from voters and even some western slope candidates (Republicans) for state and federal offices who decided to change their position based on that email debate. This email conversation may be viewed on the LPCO blog.

It is my sincere belief that we as Libertarians can affect policy outside our political party, and that we should endeavor to do exactly that. While I did not have much affect on Mr. Maes, I did have substantial impact on 3 other Republican candidates, as well as many voters from across the spectrum. I also received, as a result of said debate, an email from a Republican voter who told me he had always viewed the Libertarian Party as "a rigid branch of the Republican Party" (!!!) This debate changed his mind about that, and he noticed (finally) that ONLY the Libertarian Party talks about rights instead of government solutions.

On the Western Slope, we are also gearing up for the battle ahead on this year's ballot initiatives. Already, carefully twisted misinformations are making their way into editorials and newspaper stories. Please help by familiarizing yourselves with these issues www.cotaxreform.com, www.limitpropertytax.com and www.limitcodebt.com and write letters to the editor. If you see editorials or news stories either for or against these initiatives, please send me links to the stories at wsoutreachdirector@lpcolorado.org

  Letters To The Editor:
No Better Time Than The Present - By Jeff Orrok

We've heard this time and again: "this year the Libertarian Party could really win!" Do you ever wonder when we'll get to the point where that might be an accurate prediction?

It sure seems like the current economic and political climate has generated a level of agitation throughout our country that has not been seen in decades. The internet has facilitated the creation and organization of countless numbers of grass-roots groups. Pundits and potential candidates are blogging, podcasting, and publishing books and articles, hoping to tap into the fervor. There seems to be a lot of talk. Do you ever wonder when principled, effective action will surpass all the rhetoric?

But aside from Ron Paul, who else has stepped forward and "captured the imagination of people who are tired of business-as-usual politics and the endless chain of broken promises"? Dr. Paul is not getting any younger, and he may decide not to run in 2012, despite the best efforts of his supporters to draft him again. A lot of people were unhappy with the Libertarian Party's choice for a presidential candidate. Do you ever wonder when we'll get our own candidate who's as good (or better) than Ron Paul?

Sure, there are popular Republicans like Sarah Palin and Scott Brown, but many Libertarians are justifiably skeptical of their actual commitment to smaller government and the respect for individual rights. They seem to say "all the right things" in front of the camera, but do their track records truly reflect an unwavering dedication to cutting spending and restoring liberty?

Sure, there are even a few such "reformed" Republicans right here in Colorado, like Ryan Fraiser and Dan Maes, who seem to champion limited government values, but upon closer examination, they have been found to indulge now and then in rationalizing the need for government to infringe upon your rights in the name of "the greater good". Do you ever wonder when people are going to give up on trying to reform political parties that are suffused with manipulation, cronyism, and power-brokering?

Do you really want to see another episode of Charlie Brown trying to kick the football as the Republicans promise that "this time things will be different", or would you rather see candidates on the ballot who can be counted on to actually end programs, slash budgets, and shut down abuses of power?

With the recent decision by the Supreme Court to restore some freedom of speech in the area of campaigning, do you think that corporations and special interest groups will spend a single penny of their newly liberated money on ads for candidates who promise that they WILL NOT give them special treatment and access to everyone's wallets?

There is only one way we can have real Libertarian candidates that we have faith in and be proud of, and that is by Libertarians spending their own hard-earned money to support the Libertarian Party, so that it can find and develop those candidates.

YOU have to join those of us who realize that no one is going to hand us anything and who have decided to take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for building the party, getting the message out, and doing what it takes to run serious campaigns that will capture the media's attention and appeal to frustrated voters.

There's no way to sugar-coat the simple fact that there is no such thing as political welfare. The Libertarian Party will never get a break from anyone else holding power. The only way we will have a chance is to buy our own media, buy our own mailings, and buy our own robo-dialers. That takes money. That means we have to raise money. That means we have to ask YOU for money.

Aren't you tired of hearing people say "I'd vote for the Libertarians if they could win"? How are Libertarians going to win without support? If Libertarians are not going to support their own party, how can anyone expect non-libertarians to pay any attention to us, let alone have any confidence that we will do what we say we'll do?

The unfortunate truth is that even when you take into account the relative sizes of the parties, Libertarians don't even come close to the D's and R's when it comes to supporting their own party and their own candidates. Bill Ritter raised $6.46 per registered Democrat. Bob Beauprez raised $3.40 per registered Republican. Dawn Winkler raised 94 cents per registered Libertarian.

Seriously??? We can't even break $1 per registered Libertarian???

It is time to stop indulging in untenable idealism, and do what it takes to stop the continuous slide towards bankruptcy and tyranny.

It is time for YOU to stop hiding out in your "comfort zone". The statists aren't hiding out. They aren't bothering to conceal their true ambitions any more. Do you think they're going to wait much longer to do what they talk about if they don't see any substantial opposition? NOW is the time to take principled action. As bad as things are, there is still time -- but not much -- for peaceful people who are willing to work hard to abolish tyranny and reclaim liberty.

It is time for YOU to make some sacrifices NOW so that you aren't forced to make much worse sacrifices in a future that is becoming more of a probability with each passing day.

The PATRIOT Act didn't just come out of nowhere. It was developed over a period of time by people who were paid to do it. The statists waited patiently until the right moment. The same is true for cap-and-trade, "obamacare", and all of the other government programs. They took time and money to put together. It will take time and money to take them apart. It will take YOUR time and money.

You can spend some time and money on the Libertarian Party NOW, or you can spend more time dealing with the statists and hand over more of your money later -- and it won't be much later!

When I sat down to write this letter, I honestly intended to be positive and upbeat and say optimistic things. But the truth is I'm tired and I'm frustrated. I just don't think I have the luxury of taking time to stroke your ego and gently coax you into doing the right thing.

The plain and simple truth is that you need to give us as much as you can for as long as you can -- and it will take time -- so that we can grow and become a force for victory. We are running a marathon, not a 50-yard dash. You need to join us and stick with us until we cross the finish line.

Don't wait any longer. Send us money NOW. Go to our next event and take action.

A Lot Of Americans Identify As Libertarians - By Wes Benedict

An analysis published by the Cato Institute on January 21 offers a variety of statistics to support the notion that Americans are becoming more libertarian, and that they are becoming more comfortable with the word "libertarian" itself. I thought this study was very interesting, and I encourage you to take a look at it.

According to the study, a 2006 Zogby poll posed the following question to a sample of voters: "Would you describe yourself as fiscally conservative and socially liberal, also known as libertarian?" Apparently 44% of the respondents said "yes"! That's very encouraging to me, because I had thought the word "libertarian" was scary or confusing to most people. I doubt that all of those 44% really have political views that I would describe as libertarian, but I think it's great that they feel comfortable with the libertarian label.

The authors of the study used a different poll to determine how many voters are actually libertarian. According to their criteria, about 15% of voters are libertarian. I think one of the most important jobs of the Libertarian Party is to make sure that libertarian voters are voting for Libertarian Party candidates. There is a lot of untapped potential out there.

Obviously, the Republicans and Democrats in Washington are not making voters happy. Fewer and fewer voters are identifying as Republicans or Democrats. We need to find those voters who are libertarians, and get them to join us in our effort to bring liberty back to America.

What can you do to help? A lot of things. You can join the LP or make a contribution. You can become a Libertarian candidate, which will give you great opportunities to express Libertarian viewpoints to the public. You can volunteer locally with your Libertarian Party affiliate. Even something as simple as putting a bumper sticker or License Plate Frame on your car that says "Libertarian" is great. (In fact, some marketing and campaign professionals estimate that's worth at least $200 in advertising!)

Whatever the level of involvement you're comfortable with, please try to do something.

If you have not yet become a member of the Libertarian Party and wish to do so, please click here and join the only political party dedicated to free markets and civil liberties. If you need to renew, please click here. If you would like to make a contribution separate from membership, please click here.

Group Says City Should Consider Salary Cuts - By Joey Kirchmer

A group of Aurora activists who led a campaign against a tax hike for city libraries are calling into question the salaries of municipal employees.

Citizens for Responsible Aurora Government, or CRAG, recently filed an open records act with the state seeking information about salary and benefit pay for the city's estimated 2,600 full and part-time employees. The information recently was posted on the group's Web site at www.concernedaurora.com.

According to the group's findings: Aurora employees make an average of about $60,000 a year, the highest paid city employees make more than $200,000 a year in salary and benefits and 94 city workers boast a salary of more than $100,000.

The group believes city employees ought to bear some of the costs for making up the budget shortfalls that Aurora is currently dealing with, said CRAG member Jim Frye. The Hoffman Heights resident said salary and benefit cuts should have been part of the discussion during the campaign for 4A, a proposed property tax increase that would have kept four libraries open.

"That wasn't even on the table for discussion," Frye said.

Some have already asked him to take the salary figures down, he said.

"I've had quite a few irate responses from city employees," Frye said. "But I'm going to leave it as is. I plan to make no changes."

City officials say employees are indeed making sacrifices. Each employee is required to take two furlough days this year which will result in approximately $1 million in savings, said city budget officer Jason Batchelor. Several others took voluntary furlough days last year as well.

A Libertarian Complaint At National Conservative Conference - By Mike Lillis

As the Conservative Political Action Conference chugs on in Washington, Wes Benedict, executive director of the Libertarian Party, issued this statement reminding the world that the GOP has no moral claim to small government or fiscal responsibility.

“It’s interesting that conservatives only notice “big government” when it’s something their political enemies want. When conservatives want it, apparently it doesn’t count.”

reagan

If a conservative wants a trillion-dollar foreign war, that doesn’t count.

If a conservative wants a $700 billion bank bailout, that doesn’t count.

If a conservative wants to spend billions fighting a needless and destructive War on Drugs, that doesn’t count.

If a conservative wants to spend billions building border fences, that doesn’t count.

If a conservative wants to “protect” the huge, unjust, and terribly inefficient Social Security and Medicare programs, that doesn’t count.

If a conservative wants billions in farm subsidies, that doesn’t count.

It’s truly amazing how many things “don’t count.”

Conservatives like Rush Limbaugh can’t ever be satisfied with enough military spending and foreign wars.

Conservatives like Mitt Romney want to force everyone to buy health insurance.

Conservatives like George W. Bush — well, his list of supporting big-government programs is almost endless.

Ronald Reagan, often praised as an icon of conservatism, signed massive spending bills that made his the biggest-spending administration (as a percentage of GDP) since World War II.

As GOP leaders are busy screaming about the recent levels of deficit spending, it’s worth checking out again the historic rise of the national debt — and which party controlled the White House when the biggest jumps occurred. You know the answer.

Curtis Harris Is Running Against Congress - By Ryan Gaunt

Curtis Harris is running for Colorado's 2nd congressional district.

With the economy in recession, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan waging on to no end and Congress raising the national debt to record levels, Americans are fed up with Washington and so is Curtis Harris.

To get America headed in a better direction, Curtis Harris is running for Colorado's District 2 Congressional seat, which covers the counties of Eagle, Grand, Summit, Clear Creek, Gilpin, most of Boulder, western Adams, southwest Weld and north Jefferson. "The situation is dire", Mr. Harris told me at his Arvada home, "Americans need people in Congress willing to do what it's going to take to fix our problems."

The Democrats lost a long held senate seat in Massachusetts to a Republican, Boulder didn't pass one spending initiative this past election and Curtis Harris hopes to capitalize on the anti-establishment feeling permeating America. With his slogan Harris against Congress as opposed to the traditional campaign term 'for Congress', he is setting himself apart right from the start.

Curtis Harris has a life-time of experience which makes his common sense approach to problems a breath of fresh air in a time of political half-truths and distortions coming out of Washington. Harris was born in Kingman, Kansas and as a child lived for three years in Thailand while his father, who was a civil engineer, built roads for USAID. Harris served in the Army for 3 years in Germany with a Combat Engineer company on the East German border during the Cold War. Before enlisting he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Kansas.

In 1981 Harris finished his MBA program at the University of Minnesota. He his wife, Deborah, were married in 1982. They have one daughter who lives in Denver. Being grounded in American values and exposed to so much during his travels to Europe, South Pacific, Asia and the Americas, in combination with his business experience, Mr. Harris is a person who is full of both practical wisdom and political ideals.

On his website, www.HarrisAgainstCongress.com, he has written extensively about all his issues and even wrote an essay, It’s the Congress Stupid, about how we as Americans should be viewing our current political situation. Harris is a stimulating candidate who’s not afraid to lay out the issues, but who also writes about Natural Law and the human condition with the insight of a political philosopher.

As Mr. Harris likes to point out, “Our two party system equals one party results.” If there was ever a time when the American people should gather the courage to not just vote for the lesser of two evils, but for a candidate who will best represent them in November, now is the time and Curtis Harris is the candidate.
