It's convention time!
The Libertarian Party of Colorado's convention is Saturday, March 20, at the Red Lion Hotel. More details below).
The C&B Committee Report will be available soon. We will email a suppliment as soon as it becomes available. The Platform Committee Report is available in PDF here.
Currently, we have three Libertarians seeking our nomination for Colorado Governor.
We have candidates seeking our nomination for every U.S. Congressional District and the U.S. Senate. This is good news.
We have some candidates seeking our nomination for state General Assembly seats. We need more. If you score near the top of the Nolan Chart and can effectively articulate why you answer each question on the World Smallest Political Quiz the way you do, consider running.
With growing dissatisfaction to the big-government two-party duopoly, the Libertarian Party of Colorado has an opportunity to do well in the 2010 elections. We are the only political party that actually believes in small government and free markets. The ONLY ONE. However, to capitalize, we need to provide an option to the public. The best way to provide that option is to run as many qualified Libertarian candidates as we can. We are off to a good start. Let us keep up the pressure.
The night before our Convention, there will be a candidate reception at the Red Lion Hotel. You are encouraged to attend and meet them all. I will see you there. (More details below).
National Update:
As I write, I'm in Austin, TX, attending the yearly Libertarian State Leadership Alliance conference. It is a good opportunity to meet members of other state parties and to learn what is working in their states.
The Libertarian National Committee is also meeting at the same time. Our current National Chairman, Bill Redpath, is not seeking another term. As of now, there are five announced candidates to replace him. All five spoke at the LSLA.
If you have interest in attending the National Convention as a delegate, you are encouraged to attend the State Convention and seek a seat. Click here to RSVP!
Other National News:
Tony Ryan is our District One representative on the LNC. Tony has done a great job representing us, but is not seeking another term. Tony's alternate, Rob Latham of Utah, does not want the position but is willing to remain the alternate. Enter our own Jim Remmert, of Boulder. Jim is seeking the District One spot on the LNC being vacated by Tony. Jim is the former Associate General Counsel for Exxon and has retired in Colorado. Jim is also in Austin meeting many of the LNC and letting people know he is running. Jim has my full support and I hope you all get a chance to meet him if you have not yet.
National Delegates must be registered to vote as a Libertarian on or before Saturday March 20, 2010.
Do You Want To Run For Office in the 2010 Election?
Candidates must be registered to vote as a Libertarian on or before Friday March 12, 2010.

In addition to the election of State Board officers and the nomination of Federal, State and Local candidates, this year's convention holds special significance. We shall be nominating delegates for the National Convention to be held in Missouri in St. Louis over Memorial Day weekend.
If you would like to join the battle for smaller government and individual liberty, please consider becoming a candidate.
Candidate Application forms are available in .doc and in .pdf format. Use this form to communicate to me your desire to run for a specific office. If you do not have a specific office in mind, all 65 Colorado House of Representative seats are up for election in November, so you can chose that office.
Of course, should you have a question, please e-mail me. I can provide you with our 2010 Candidate's Handbook which explains everything.
Take the plunge, you'll find it fun and exciting to actually be doing something.
If Colorado ever needed the Libertarian Party, it's now. And if the Libertarian Party ever needed your participation and support, it's now. Meet the board in Aurora and help shape Colorado's future on our historic mission to restore Liberty to Colorado.
I provided Jim Lark, National Libertarian Party campus outreach coordinator, with updated contact information for the Colorado State University affiliate. Lark provided some campus outreach material which I forwarded to Kristian Morey, CSU Libertarian Party affiliate president.
I spoke to a student at the School of Mines (CSM) about organizing (or re-organizing) a campus affiliate. Currently the CSM libertarian students are meeting informally at the Liberty on the Rocks/Red Rocks meetups.
When I found out that Doug lives in El Paso county, I suggested that he might want to get involved with the nascent and growing core of Libertarian Party activists there and sent his contact information to the group of potential El Paso County activists.
The state capitol building will undergo extensive renovations. To help finance the work, it has been suggested that the state might allow "tasteful advertising" on the scaffolding that will be surrounding the building and dome. This might be an advertising opportunity for the Libertarian Party of Colorado, depending on advertising policies and price, of course.
We have achieved our goal. We will have at least four candidates on every ballot in the state in November; five candidates on every ballot in Colorado is very likely. This is not my accomplishment, it is YOUR accomplishment. What is even more impressive is the high quality of our candidates and that several of these wonderful candidates are running very active campaigns; some more active then we Libertarians have ever achieved before. We can be very proud of those who are stepping up to the plate and getting out name, Libertarian, on four million ballots (times five!) come November. Election day will be a great day for us, something we can really look forward to. Soon I hope to switch to Election Night party preparations. Be there!!!
Wouldn't you like to be an active part of this great event? Are you not tired of the status quo? Is not this year the time to stand up and say, "It's time I did something"? There are 16 State Senate seats, 64 State House seats, and hundreds of county office slots on the November ballot that will be empty. Please consider filling one.
Yes, there will be an event or two that you will need to attend, some questionnaires to fill out, some campaign finance reports to make (on the Web, electronically). Total investment is about 12 hours of your time. I hope and pray that you will decide that this is the year that you will do more than just vote. Besides being fun, there is that really good feeling you get when you know in your heart: "At least I did something about it".
Please e-mail me at campaigns@lpcolorado.org or leave a message at 303-277-9967 to volunteer to be a candidate. You do not have to be at the convention to be a candidate, and we can fill vacancies for a short period time after the convention.
As of February 1st, there are 8,057 active and 3,896 inactive for a total of 11,953 registered Libertarians in Colorado. This gives us a growth rate of 1.2% for a 30 day period and a projected growth rate of 15.44% for the year. However, given it is an election year, this is probably pretty low.
Voter Registration forms with this year's number are finally available. On Wednesday, February 10th, SB10-104 "Additional VRD Requirements" died in the Colorado Senate's State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committee. The final vote followed party lines (2 Republicans vs. 3 Democrats).
In addition to myself, representatives from Common Cause and New Era Colorado testified against the bill.
Christine Tucker and some Arapahoe and YAL activists staffed an outreach table at the Cannabis Expo in Fort Collins. There was an extremely small turnout (less than 200 total), but there were 6 Libertarian and 1 unaffiliated registrations, about 20 contacts, and $8.61 in donations.
I am starting to receive reminders to register for events such as Cinco De Mayo, Peoples Fair, and Pridefest, but due to our lack of funds, I am unable to submit applications. We need $1000 for booth fees ASAP! Click here to donate $1,000.00 for a Libertarian Party presence at these festivals.

I met with Buck Bailey and got a copy of his famous legislative spreadsheet. It's brilliant and simple. Some might say it's brilliant because of its simplicity.
Coordinated with Patty Springmeier to help with the End the Patriot Act rally at the Capitol. Suggested that Dave speak, which he did very well. (good job Dave) Advertised the rally via the Liberty Alerts a couple times.
Followed the "dirty dozen" and sent a couple Liberty Alerts concerning the times and locations for the hearings. Used my inside contact to get the latest scoop!
Thanks to Jim Frye, I have been alerted to House Bill 10-1143, which appears to enable RTD to trample property rights even further. Need to research this particular bill a bit more.
I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of "fusion voting" (HB 1077), as I would prefer almost any other alternative voting method to fusion.... but, alternative voting still needs exposure, so I still support any attempt at furthering the alternative voting movement.
I still want to do a podcast. The LPCO needs money to record studio quality podcasts. Click here to donate $50.00 for the first one.
Please forward this information to friends and family who are concerned about defending our freedoms!
After our last meeting, I volunteered to read "The Naked Truth About Drugs" by Daniel E. Williams so the board could consider distributing the book in medical marijuana dispensaries. I read the book in nearly 3 days, putting it down only when I absolutely had to. Williams' book is a recount of his experiences with drugs, moving chronologically through American history as most people were exposed to them, including marijuana, LSD, heroin, morphine, etc, etc.
My only "complaint" would be the obvious attempts at adding historical context from statistics that support his arguments, but if you opt to read the book as more of one man's stories about drug use and his thoughts on public policy, then I think anyone would find it very enjoyable.
As a result, I suggest the LP distributes our copies of the book, with LP stickers on them, to various dispensaries around town.
I have been communicating with our new contact at Clear Channel Radio, Brian Johnson. He will hopefully be attending one of board meetings in the near future. My efforts to work with him were thwarted by my spam filter, which stopped all of his emails to me, but I think I've caught up with him. He is excited to work with the LP and I am hoping he will be able to help us grow our media.
I know Justin is eager to record more podcasts, but we're on hold for two reasons: The new Web site is not ready, and we have no money. I'm hesitant to spend even $25 a month when our bank account is dropping below $700. Anyone wishing to contribute funds to pay for pod-cast recordings may do so by clicking here.
I have already mentioned this to some on the board, but I will not be attending the convention due to a longstanding conflict. Rick Randall is acting as the proxy media director and will present my minority report on the motion to eliminate the publications director and wrap the newsletter under the new position, "Communications Director."
NOTE TO CANDIDATES: I was contacted by John King from the Pennsylvania Libertarian Party about his media project, The Freedom Link. His goal is to interview every third party candidate for Congress in the country and place the video interview on his YouTube Channel. Rumor has it that his project may have some "truther" ties, so beware of that. But I did notify him that I would send him a list of our Congressional candidates after the convention so he will be contacting you. You can find information about his project at: www.thefreedomlink.org
I am calling Libertarians in Denver County and focusing on the people with whom I only left a message the first time through. John Finger is also calling in the El Paso County area. If you want to assist LPCO in gaining more Activist and Contribution support in your county, contact me at membershipdirector@lpcolorado.org. I have an easy 4 question script and use a Google Docs spreadsheet to log each voter's reply.
Candidates - Do you know who your contributors and activists are in your district? If not, contact me – membershipdirector@lpcolorado.org
I have been focusing more on my Congressional candidacy for the last month and will strive to dovetail both the campaign and the Membership Director duties for the rest of 2010.
OPPORTUNITY to help liberty: Volunteer Coordinator for the Libertarian Party of Colorado.
This person will use their people skills to find, motivate, and guide the various volunteers
that contact the LPCO, matching the volunteer interests to the needs of the organization.
This is a volunteer position for a political party that has a Board of Directors
that is committed, interesting, and active in the community.
A one year commitment with an average of 4-6 hours per week is needed.
Please contact membershipdirector@lpcolorado.org with interest and questions

We have increased our Membership to nearly 12,000 members. Still, there are only Thirty Two 1776 Club Members.
Please join these 32 dedicated individuals who help Coloradans hear the vigilant voice of liberty. With their support, Libertarians have ballot access, basic support for local Libertarian Candidates, rent, utilities, outreach/education for Colorado Voters.
Any amount helps. If we can do this much for free, what could we do with a positive budget? Please donate.
Leah Kelley is seeking a computer literate Libertarian with some bookkeeping skills to train as the new Treasurer.
This is a volunteer position that requires a two year commitment with an average of 2 hours per week
maintaining accurate records of all income & expenses associated with the operation of the State Party.
The Libertarian Party of Delta County has a new outreach director--Gary Johnson. Gary will
also be the first Libertarian Party candidate in Delta County, when he runs for district 1
county commissioner this year. I will serve as his campaign manager.
I initiated an email conversation with one of the Republican governor
candidates, Dan Maes, about gay marriage, rights vs. privileges and the
responsibilities inherent in rights. Mr. Maes claims that marriage is a
privilege, not a right, and that the constitution gives us our rights and
all else is privilege. As this conversation began to develop into a debate,
I included many other people onto the thread, including many Democrats and
Republicans. The reception to and support of my position was well received
by most of these people (and to my surprise for some of those people) and I
received many emails from voters and even some western slope candidates
(Republicans) for state and federal offices who decided to change their
position based on that email debate. This email conversation may be viewed
on the LPCO blog.
It is my sincere belief that we as Libertarians can affect policy outside
our political party, and that we should endeavor to do exactly that. While I
did not have much affect on Mr. Maes, I did have substantial impact on 3
other Republican candidates, as well as many voters from across the
spectrum. I also received, as a result of said debate, an email from a
Republican voter who told me he had always viewed the Libertarian Party as "a rigid branch
of the Republican Party" (!!!) This debate changed his mind about that, and
he noticed (finally) that ONLY the Libertarian Party talks about rights instead of
government solutions.
On the Western Slope, we are also gearing up for the battle ahead on this
year's ballot initiatives. Already, carefully twisted misinformations are
making their way into editorials and newspaper stories. Please help by
familiarizing yourselves with these issues www.cotaxreform.com,

and www.limitcodebt.com and write letters to the
editor. If you see editorials or news stories either for or against these
initiatives, please send me links to the stories at
