From Christine Smith-

I am pleased that my letter to the editor was published in the Pueblo Chieftain, however the important paragraph describing what makes the double contribution amount unfair was omitted and a sentence I did not write was inserted instead, apparently meant to paraphrase my sentences regarding that point, but the inserted sentence gives a false impression that I believe the R’s and D’s have a legitimate reason for those double contribution amounts – just the opposite of the point I was making.  To clarify, here is my original paragraph about that (which was within the word count) for letters:

Even when a Republican or Democrat faces no opposition
from their own party (meaning they are automatically the
candidate, no primary needed) they’re allowed to take
contributions for the primary in addition to contributions for
the general election.  A Libertarian candidate in an identical
situation is not allowed this. So, I can accept only $200
maximum from individual contributors (despite several
wanting to contribute more), although Massey can and does
take double that.

$75 for misplaced stickers

DENVER — You could call it a case of sticker shock. A Denver man is facing a hefty fine because the stickers on his license plate were backwards.

Ron Berquist was stunned to find a ticket on his minivan after his doctor’s appointment.

He is facing a $75 fine because his license tags were in the wrong spot.

Does the punishment fit the crime? People make small errors all of the time, especially when it comes to government and who can blame them, it is not as if government makes these things easy to know. One goal of libertarians at a local level should be eliminate these silly laws and rules, reduce the fines on those things we just simply cannot politically get eliminated and discourage the enforcement of such silly government decrees.

LPCO Liberty Alert HR 5175

HR 5175 is Congress’ response to the Supreme Court’s decision in January (“Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.”).  HR 5175 adds many complicated provisions to the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971.  It will affect ALL people and organizations.  HR 5175 appears to be written to ensure freedom groups cannot rally their members in the upcoming elections by placing erroneous reporting mandates on them and by forcing them to disclose their membership rosters and donor lists. These mandates apply to individuals and groups which make independent donations or promote their favored candidate outside the realm of the official campaigns, namely Grassroots activism.

The bill, sponsored by Maryland Representative Chris Van Hollen has moved out of committee and currently has 114 Cosponsors.
It is on its way to the House floor for a vote.  CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND LET THEM KNOW THAT HR 5175 SHOULD BE KILLED ASAP!!
